While the state of world affairs has been a concern for many years, it was not until September of 2008 that the media began reporting in earnest on developments that apparently just came to their attention, giving indications to the general public that matters were far worse than many of us might have supposed.

Acai berry is new to the supplement industry. Acai fruit is often made into acai juice or freeze dried into powder or made into capsules. The local natives and population has been using this as a beverage and for recipes for years. The flavor is pleasing and you may find that adding it to recipes can add a unique flavor. Adding freeze dried powder to yogurt or smoothie is a treat giving it a flavor similar to blueberry’s with a touch of chocolate.

The rock currant is a thornless shrub of upright habit growing to a height of 1.5-2 m. The stems are reddish brown with bark that tends to peel; the buds are ‘dark brown, ovate. The reddish flowers appear at the end of May, the red, slightly sour berries in drooping clusters ripen in August and the seeds are dispersed by birds.

The small flowers appear in succession from June to August followed by white berries, which likewise ripen successively from August to October. This shrub is an important source of food for bees, providing them with nourishment in the summer months when most woody plants have already ceased flowering.

The quince is a tree-like shrub growing to a height of 2-7 m. The shoots and buds are felted, older branches are glabrous. The whitish flowers have a, felted calyx and appear in May after the leaves. The unripe fruits are also felted, becoming smooth and turning lemon yellow when they ripen in October; these have a pleasant scent and are terminated by large, pointed sepals.

The Duke of Argyll’s tea tree is a thorny shrub, 1-2 m in height, with long, drooping pale grey shoots. Older twigs have short side twigs terminated by a thorn. The small buds are borne on broad, peg-like projections.

Clove is the dried flower bud of a tropical evergreen tree, native of the Moluccas, which reaches a height of 20 m (65 ft).
